HAL’s Fall Show at the Boone County Public Library Mezzanine display area and sculpture cases

This annual HAL-sponsored art show will take entries on Thursday, October 2nd at the Boone County Library from 3:00–5:30PM. The art will then be up in the library for about a month. The show will be judged, with various categories and prize money awarded.
Delivery: ​Bring your art to the Boone County Library Mezzanine, Thursday, Oct. 2nd, 3:00 to 5:30 PM.

Media & Size:   All works must be no smaller than 8 x 10 inches and created within the last 5 years. Art works must be original artworks, gallery ready with frames and wire hangers. All media is welcome: Acrylics, Oils, Gouache,Watercolor, Graphite, Pastels, Ink, Sculpture and Mixed Media.

Divisions: Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Mixed Media and Photography

If less than 3 entries in one category the artwork will be moved to a different category.

Fees:

HAL Members – 1st piece free, $10 each additional piece

Non-members – $15 per piece of 2 for $25

Payment Methods​​Cash or check only

Awards: $100 awarded to the best artwork in each division.

Sales:​ Work may be labeled Not for Sale (NFS). Sales will be worked out between the artist and the buyer. No commissions, no fees. To facilitate sales, artists should include their contact information on their works’ labels.

Take Down: All work must be picked up Thursday, Oct. 30th, 3:00-5:30 PM at BCL. Any work that is not picked up at that time will be held by HAL until other arrangements are made.

It’s that time of the year again: play submission time! You may submit today through December 31st!

Non-directors, now would be the time to start flattering the directors, bringing them coffee from Six Sisters, buying them cupcakes from The Cake Shop, etc., if you want them to choose a certain play! 😜

In all seriousness, if you are *not* an Ozark Arts Council-approved director but would like to see a specific show, there is a list of approved directors that you may choose from and submit.

The Story

The Christmas Tree Farm will be performed as dinner theatre (as well as a brunch and charcuterie/dessert theatre) Live at the Twelve Oaks December 11-14. December 11 at 6:00pm will be a charcuterie and dessert theatre, December 12 and 13 at 6:00pm will be a dinner theatre, December 13 and 14 at 1:00pm will be a brunch theatre (please note that there are 2 (two) performances on December 13.

A series of vignettes, mostly love stories, taking place at a Christmas tree farm, including a breakup, a breakdown, a meet cute, four Santas, a film director, high school sweethearts, and some carolers. A holiday play about love and joy.

Next to Normal, with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt, explores how one suburban household copes with crisis and mental illness. Winner of three 2009 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Score and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize, Next to Normal was also chosen as “one of the year’s ten best shows” by critics around the country, including The Los AngelesTimes, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone and The New York Times.

Dad (Brian Ashton Miller) is an architect; Mom (Julianna Hamblin) rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter (Emily Provence) and son (Gavin Wilson) are bright, wise-cracking teens, and, for all intents and purposes, they appear to be a typical American family. And yet their lives are anything but normal—the mother has been battling bipolar disorder for 16 years. With a boyfriend (Jayden Bradshaw) and a well-meaning doctor (Corey Smith), the family must learn what it means to find a light in the dark. Next to Normal takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family’s story with love, sympathy, and heart.

This deeply moving piece of theatre provides a wonderful opportunity for performers to explore dramatic material and showcase vocal talents with an energetic pop/rock score. Next to Normal is an emotional powerhouse that addresses such issues as grieving a loss, ethics in modern psychiatry, and suburban life.

This play is rated PG-13 due to strong language, depictions of self-harm, discussion of suicide, and medical trauma. Parental guidance is advised. If you or someone you know needs help, call 988. Every Life Is Worth Saving.

Join us on November 1 at 7:00, as Billy, Will, and Dustin—Heavy Wrecker—have done it again: they’ve once again assembled a fantastic ‘supergroup’ of local musicians and vocalists to pay tribute to Eric Clapton—the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame—covering the great span of his music, both from his solo career and from his time in the Yardbirds, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, and Derek and the Dominos.

Ever since the Led Zeppelin tribute the band organized in 2019—which was the most successful concert of purely local musicians since Screamin’ Freeman’s 24-hour Guinness World Record concert in 1999!—Billy Youngblood and his crew have led the community into a growing appreciation of the historic Lyric Theater by paying tribute to the musical craftsman who have shaped their playing and our culture as a whole. The music of Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Tom Petty has made for a unifying showcase of the talents of several local bands, and now Eric Clapton’s music will do the same. This promises to be another experience Harrison area music lovers will talk about for years, and one well worth coming from out of town to see. Tickets are on sale now!

Odds bobs hammers and tongs! Tony-nominated Peter and the Starcatcher upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan comes to be The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up (a.k.a. Peter Pan). A wildly theatrical adaptation of Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s best-selling novels, the play was conceived for the stage by directors Roger Rees and Alex Timbers and written by Rick Elice with music by Wayne Barker. From marauding pirates and jungle tyrants to unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes, Peter and the Starcatcher playfully explores the depths of greed and despair and the bonds of friendship, duty, and love.

A young orphan (Wesley Gilbert) and his mates (Emma Braswell and Abbey Jenkins) are shipped off by the evil orphanage master Grempkin (Fred Lutz) from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. They know nothing of the mysterious trunk in Lord Leonard Aster’s (Jayden Bradshaw) cabin, which contains a precious, otherworldly cargo. At sea, the boys are discovered by a precocious young girl named Molly (Juniper Salsman), a Starcatcher-in-training, who realizes that the trunk’s precious cargo is starstuff, a celestial substance so powerful it must never fall into the wrong hands, like the dreadful Pirate Slank (Braden Haley) or his Enforcer (Abigail Harrison). When the ship is taken over by pirates – led by the fearsome Black Stache (Griffin Motley), a villain determined to claim the trunk and its treasure for his own (aided by Smee—Isaak Farmer—of course) – the journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure. With a crew of dastardly pirates (Savannah Mount, Liberty Simon), sailors who turn into Mollusks (Peyton Le, Susannah Boren, Bailey Kolb, Finley Bailey, Lena Harris), a gassy pirate (Landyn Gilbert) and his lady-love (Rachel Hayes), and mermaids who used to be fish (Hayleigh Rodery), this is going to be an awfully big adventure!

Described by Edward Albee as “the greatest American play ever written,” Our Town is not merely a play; it is a devastating mediation on the swiftness of life itself. Presented in three acts, “Daily Life,” “Love and Marriage,” and “Death and Eternity,” the small town of Grover’s Corners unfolds under the watchful Stage Manager (Myles Gilbert). Performed with minimal props and sets, the play strips bare the spectacle and forces us to look beyond and straight into the aching heart of existence. Our Town depicts the simple daily lives of the local newspaper editor, Mr. Webb (Matt Hamblin), his wife, Myrtle (Kathern Scott), and their children Emily (Wynn Mahoney and Valeria Carbajal) and Wally (George Fancher); and Dr. Gibbs (Michael Mahoney), his wife, Julia (Mary Beth Anderson), and their children, George (Wesley Gilbert and Oliver Bemis) and Rebecca (Emma Braswell). As the children grow up, fall in love, marry, and eventually – in one of the most famous scenes in American theatre – die, we see the minutiae of their daily lives and the lives of the townsfolk, the comfort and joy of simple routine. 
 
The beautiful and sleepy town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire is brought to life by many others—Joe and Si Crowell (Hayleigh Rodery and Mattison Fay), the Constable (Shawn Aiden Nicks), Howie, the milkman (Bailey Kolb), Professor Willard (Landyn Gilbert), and choir director Simon Stimson (Brooks Cheek). Surrounded by a full cast who embody the full spectrum of living and lived, (Kayla Long, Jayden Bradshaw, Madison Tucker, Lena Harris, Ellie Jones, Jake Fancher, Johnny Phillips, Rachel Hayes, Jaxon Marcum, Chasity Price, Juni Salsman, Trinity Scott), we are transported to both the mundanity of ordinary life and the beauty of that same daily life.

An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! (At least the losers get a juice box!)

The Story

Our Town will be performed Live at the Lyric November 14-15 and November 21-22, 2025 at 7:00PM, Sunday November 16 and November 17, 2025 at 2:00PM.

 

This edition of the play differs only slightly from previous acting editions, yet it presents Our Town as Thornton Wilder wished it to be performed. Described by Edward Albee as “the greatest American play ever written,” Our Town presents the small town of Grover’s Corners in three acts: “Daily Life,” “Love and Marriage” and “Death and Eternity.” Narrated by a stage manager and performed with minimal props and sets, the play depicts the simple daily lives of the Webb and Gibbs families as their children fall in love, marry, and eventually – in one of the most famous scenes in American theatre – die. Thornton Wilder’s final word on how he wanted his play performed is an invaluable addition to the American stage and to the libraries of theatre lovers internationally.
